A car’s timing belt is not checked in an MOT test. This is because the belt is often hidden behind covers and other components, meaning that it is labour-intensive to inspect it. If the timing belt is neglected, it can lead to disastrous results. This is because the timing belt is responsible for keeping the engine’s timing in check; if it snaps while the car’s turned on, engine components will be open and close out of sync. Engine components firing out of sync means that they are smashing together, which leads to further damage. This damage could result in you needing a new engine.
There is not a one rule fits all for timing belts, there are many factors to consider when changing a timing belt. For example, manufacturer stipulations, general engine condition, mileage and age. Some manufacturers state that the timing belt needs to be changed after 50,000 miles, while others suggest 100,000 miles, which is why we recommend you check your car’s owner’s manual or check online. Other manufacturers will stipulate a number of years that you should let pass in between timing belt changes.
